They appear on the 1881 census living at 16 Goodnestone Road, Sittingbourne, Kent. His sister-in-law, Susannah Holland, was also living in the house. James was a general labourer. In 1891 and 1901 the family lived in one of the cottages left to James by his uncle William, in Horselees, Dunkirk. James had changed his occupation to being a bricklayers labourer by 1901.¹
