In 1861 he and his brothers, Arthur and Charles were in the Medway Workhouse in Gillingham, presumably this was a temporary arrangement as he was obviously in touch with his father because a son of his was staying with his stepmother Sarah Ann in 1891.

In 1871 he was working as a telegraph clerk, and boarding at 48 Stone St., Westgate, Newcastle.

By 1901 George had been promoted to be a telegraph supervisor. At that time the family lived at 264 Epland Road, Camberwell, Dulwich.
